Lioness Kills Waterbuck… Or Does She?

Category: Lions | Date: Nov 12 2008 | By: ewasolions

Just before I left Samburu, I went out on my last game-drive as the rains had begun.  I was driving near Larsens Camp when I came across Nashipai with a warthog in her mouth.  She was moving quickly and I lost sight of her.  As I looked for her, I stumbled across Nabo instead who appeared to be hunting.  I then saw some impala and a lone male waterbuck and thought that Nabo was close enough to the impala to get one. I followed at a distance watching the impala but lost sight of Nabo.

After a few minutes, I heard a loud bleating sound and drove quickly towards it. I found Nabo on top of the male waterbuck!  Watch the video below to see what happened.

Wow…You have to admire that waterbuck. Getting up and running away after being chewed on for a minute and a half. That’s impressive. Did Nabo ever get dinner?

Hi Anna,

Yes the waterbuck was pretty amazing to withstand that. And it was actually more than a minute. I had to cut the video to upload it, but it was actually being eaten for about 16 minutes in total!

Unfortunately, it started pouring with rain soon after the end of that video. Nabo headed back to her cubs and it got dark then.

I tried looking for Nabo the following morning and also the waterbuck - but found neither. So, am not too sure what happened. But I doubt the waterbuck survived those injuries.

Thanks for your comment!

how old is nabo? she did not kill or gave it a fatal bite. why? inexperienced? i would hate to see any living thing being eaten alive and for this long? nabo is not a good huntress to me. even if she could consume that waterbuck, if there were competitors around, she would have lost her prey to them due to the noise and all the movement.

that poor buck might get one awful case of infection from the lioness’s bite. cat bites can be really bad. some people have died from mere domestic cat bites. and i had really bad infection on my arm from my tom cat’s biting me. i was giving him a bath. and he was so pissed off at me. he had given me many warnings ; but i had to finish it .

the lioness’s eating some prey alive might seem cruel to many viewers. but i must remind us, the human beings, that we have been doing and are doing more cruel needless acts against our food animals or animals for the sake of cheap food, free market, profit and sick thrill.

Hi Sauwah,
Nabo is now close to 7 years old. She actually is a very experienced lioness at hunting. Unfortunately, she was distracted by some vehicles and people and that made her lose her focus slightly on the waterbuck. The second that she lost focus entirely - he was given a window of opportunity to get away. I don’t think the waterbuck would have survived. He could barely walk and I am sure something (hopefully Nabo) may have got him that night.
